What Is a Fair Car Accident Settlement in Hendersonville, Gallatin and Goodlettsville?

Across Sumner County, a fair settlement usually falls between $4,000 and $25,000 for whiplash or another soft tissue injury, between $32,000 and $150,000 for a broken bone or herniated disc that heals, and at $250,000 or more for permanent harm, under Tennessee's one year deadline, 50 percent fault bar and $750,000 cap on pain and suffering. In Goodlettsville, which straddles the Davidson County line, the side of the line decides which court would hear the case.

What a claim is worth

Sumner County ranges, from Goodlettsville to Gallatin

No court or insurer publishes what Sumner County crash claims settle for. The figures below are what the standard valuation method produces for the injuries these crashes cause, under Tennessee law, before any reduction for fault.

Whiplash and soft tissueWeeks of treatment; bills around $2,500 to $9,000.
$4,000 to $25,000
Broken bone or herniated discHealing expected; bills roughly $12,000 to $40,000.
$32,000 to $150,000
Permanent harmLasting limits, often after surgery; bills over $60,000.
$250,000 and up

Tennessee method bands, identical across the state: bills times 1.5 to 2.5, 2.5 to 3.5 or 4 to 5, plus lost wages. Not court averages.

The bands are the same in Hendersonville as in Nashville. What is not the same is everything around them. Goodlettsville is split between two counties, so a crash a few hundred yards apart can belong to two different courts. Sumner County's crash count climbed 21 percent in four years while its fatal crashes fell to the lowest levels of the period. And the number of drivers 65 and over involved in crashes rose by more than half. Each of those facts shapes a claim here, and each is covered below.

Your figures

Estimate a Hendersonville or Gallatin claim

The estimator applies Tennessee's fault bar, its $750,000 limit on pain and suffering, and the $25,000 per person minimum policy. It works the same for a crash on either side of the county line, because both counties follow Tennessee law.

One city, two counties

Goodlettsville and the Davidson County line

Goodlettsville sits in two counties. Of its 17,433 residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate, 11,112 live on the Davidson County side and 6,321 on the Sumner County side. The city's police department covers both parts, but the courts do not. Which side of the line the crash happened on decides where a lawsuit would be filed, and everything downstream of that.

Crash figures: TDOSHS TITAN, 2024 and the 2021 to 2025 rankings. Clerk details from the Sumner County and Metro Nashville circuit court clerks.

The law is the same on both sides: Tennessee's one year deadline, 50 percent fault bar and damages cap do not change at the county line. What changes is the court that would hear the case and the community its jury would be drawn from, and an insurer weighs where a case would be tried when it decides what to offer. Before any demand goes out, the first fact to pin down for a Goodlettsville crash is the exact location, which the crash report records.

The lake commute

How Sumner County gets to Nashville

Hendersonville and Gallatin sit on the north shore of Old Hickory Lake, and most of their traffic to Nashville funnels onto a few roads that cross the county line near Goodlettsville and Madison. That geography is why so many Sumner County claims begin on the same handful of corridors.

Vietnam Veterans Boulevard (SR 386)

A 17 mile route, mostly four lane and controlled access, from I-65 at Goodlettsville through Hendersonville to US 31E in Gallatin. It was built as a bypass of US 31E and is a main commuter route between the lake cities and Nashville. Its interchanges, where commuters enter at speed, are the points to watch in a rear-end or merge claim.

US 31E (Nashville Pike and Main Street)

The older route: Gallatin Pike through Madison, then Main Street through Hendersonville and on to Gallatin and north toward Kentucky. Signals, driveways and turning traffic make it a different road from SR 386, with more chances for angle and turning collisions.

Interstate 65, exits 92 to 98

Old Hickory Boulevard at exit 92 in Madison, Vietnam Veterans Boulevard at exit 95, Rivergate Parkway at 96, Long Hollow Pike at 97 and US 31W at 98 in Millersville, then on toward White House and Kentucky. The Goodlettsville exits are where the county line, the interstate and the commuter routes all meet.

Long Hollow Pike (SR 174)

The east to west road linking Goodlettsville, northern Hendersonville and Gallatin, and the neighborhoods that have grown up along it.

US 31W

North from Goodlettsville through Millersville and White House toward Kentucky, parallel to I-65, with the mix of local and through traffic that comes with it.

SR 109

The north to south route from Gallatin across Old Hickory Lake toward Lebanon and I-40 in Wilson County, carrying commuters and trucks between the two counties.

Tennessee law

The rules behind every Sumner County number

One year to sue
The lawsuit must be filed within one year of the crash, or two years in some cases where the other driver is criminally charged (T.C.A. § 28-3-104). Settlement talks do not extend it.
Under 50 percent at fault
Recovery is reduced by your share of fault and barred at 50 percent or more (McIntyre v. Balentine, 1992).
A ceiling on pain and suffering only
$750,000, or $1,000,000 for catastrophic injury, with no limit for an intoxicated driver (T.C.A. § 29-39-102). Bills and wages are never capped.
$25,000 minimum coverage
Per injured person, $50,000 per crash (T.C.A. § 55-12-102). Your own uninsured motorist coverage, at your liability limits unless rejected in writing (§ 56-7-1201), covers the gap.
Twelve months for a government vehicle
A Hendersonville, Gallatin, Goodlettsville, Metro Nashville or Sumner County vehicle: suit within twelve months, recovery limited to $300,000 per person (T.C.A. § 29-20-305, § 29-20-403).
Billed charges count
Medical damages are measured by what was billed, not by the discounted amount a health plan paid (Dedmon v. Steelman, 2017).

What the numbers say about Sumner County claims

  • Fatal crashes fell by about half. 11 in 2024 and 10 in 2025, against 18 to 22 in each of the three years before. On the five year average Sumner ranks 93rd of 95 counties for fatal crash rate.
  • Crashes grew faster than drivers. All crashes rose 21 percent from 2021 to 2025 while licensed drivers rose about 13 percent, from 157,292 to 177,290, and most of the increase was property damage crashes.
  • Older drivers: up 58 percent. Drivers 65 and over were involved in 916 crashes in 2025, against 581 in 2021. Claims involving older drivers often turn on medical history, which makes treatment records from the first days after the crash especially important.
  • Teen drivers: up 24 percent, from 702 to 874 drivers aged 15 to 19 involved in crashes.
  • Population. Sumner County reached 211,721 in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate, up from 196,280 in 2020. Gallatin grew fastest of the county's cities, to 52,489 from 44,453, and Hendersonville reached 63,947. Goodlettsville, across both counties, counted 17,433.

Examples

Three Sumner County claims, with the arithmetic

Hypothetical claims built on the corridors and figures above. They are illustrations, not client results.

Hypothetical
A rear-end on Vietnam Veterans Boulevard at rush hour

A Hendersonville commuter slows for traffic near an interchange and is struck from behind. Whiplash, five weeks of therapy, a week and a half off work.

Medical bills, as charged
$7,200
Wages lost
$2,100
Multiplier, soft tissue
1.5 to 2.5
Range
$12,900 to $20,100

A Sumner County claim filed, if it ever came to that, in Gallatin. Rear-end fault is rarely in doubt on a road like SR 386, so the negotiation is about the injury and the therapy record.

Hypothetical
A side impact on Long Hollow Pike, Davidson side of Goodlettsville

A driver turning out of a shopping center is hit by a car that ran a stale yellow. Fractured collarbone, healing without surgery, three weeks off work. The report places the crash on the Davidson County side of the city.

Medical bills
$16,500
Wages lost
$3,600
Multiplier, fracture with recovery
2.5 to 3.5
Range
$44,850 to $61,350

Same Tennessee law as the example above, but a lawsuit would go to the Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville, not to Gallatin. Goodlettsville Police wrote the report either way.

Hypothetical
An older driver, a left turn on US 31E in Gallatin, shared fault

A 71 year old driver turning left is struck by a speeding oncoming car. The insurer argues the turning driver should have waited and puts 25 percent of the fault on them. A herniated disc that heals with therapy, and an insurer pointing to earlier back complaints.

Medical bills
$22,000
Wages lost (retired)
$0
Multiplier, disc injury with recovery
2.5 to 3.5
Before fault
$55,000 to $77,000
After 25 percent fault
$41,250 to $57,750

Two arguments decide this claim: the fault split, and whether the disc injury is new or a flare of an old condition. Tennessee law allows recovery for aggravation of a pre-existing condition, which is why records showing how the back felt before the crash are worth gathering early.

Representation

When to bring in a lawyer for a Sumner County claim

A minor injury claim with clear fault and a cooperative insurer can often be closed directly. A lawyer tends to change the result in these Sumner County situations:

  • A Goodlettsville crash near the county line, where the right court has to be identified and the case filed there within the year.
  • An older claimant with earlier medical history, where the claim depends on separating a new injury, or the worsening of an old one, from what was there before.
  • A fracture, surgery or lasting injury, where the claim runs into six figures and the medical record has to be complete.
  • Disputed fault in a turning crash on US 31E or Long Hollow Pike, where a few points of fault move the result by thousands of dollars.
  • A driver with the minimum policy, where your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage has to be claimed correctly.

FairSettlement's free review asks where the crash happened, how you were hurt and how you were treated, then shows a range built on the method on this page. A licensed Tennessee attorney contacts you only if you ask.

Questions people in Hendersonville ask

Hendersonville, Gallatin and Goodlettsville settlement questions

What is a fair car accident settlement in Hendersonville?

By the method adjusters use, a whiplash or soft tissue claim with prompt treatment settles around $4,000 to $25,000, a broken bone or herniated disc that heals around $32,000 to $150,000, and permanent harm at $250,000 or more, before any reduction for your share of fault. The same bands apply in Gallatin and Goodlettsville, because the whole area follows Tennessee law. Your own figure depends on your bills, lost wages and treatment record.

My crash was in Goodlettsville. Which court would hear my case?

It depends on which side of the county line the crash happened. Goodlettsville is split between Davidson County, where about 11,100 of its residents live, and Sumner County, where about 6,300 live. A crash on the Sumner side belongs to the Sumner County Circuit Court in Gallatin, in the 18th Judicial District; a crash on the Davidson side belongs to the Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville, in the 20th Judicial District. The crash report records the location.

Is the law different on the Davidson side of Goodlettsville?

No. Both counties apply Tennessee law: the one year filing deadline, the 50 percent fault bar, the $750,000 cap on pain and suffering and the same insurance minimums. Only the court, the clerk's office and the community the jury is drawn from change.

How long do I have to file a lawsuit after a Sumner County crash?

A year, counted from the day of the crash (Tenn. Code Ann. § 28-3-104). A criminal charge against the other driver can stretch that to two years in limited circumstances. When the vehicle that hit you belonged to a city, to Metro Nashville or to Sumner County, the Governmental Tort Liability Act gives you twelve months to file the suit itself (§ 29-20-305). Talking with an adjuster does not stop any of these clocks.

How do I get a Hendersonville police crash report?

Email the Hendersonville Police records unit the report number, the crash date and a copy of your driver's license (allow 5 to 7 days); buy it through PurchaseTNcrash.gov; or pick it up at the police department at 3 Executive Park Dr with the report number and your license (allow 3 to 5 days).

How do I get a Gallatin crash report?

Gallatin reports are usually available about a week after the crash through the Tennessee Department of Safety's online portal. Have a driver's last name, the driver's license number, the report number and the crash date ready.

Where is the Sumner County courthouse for injury cases?

The Sumner County Circuit Court Clerk is at 155 E Main St, Gallatin, TN 37066, phone 615-452-4367, serving the 18th Judicial District. Claims up to $25,000 can be filed in General Sessions Court instead (Tenn. Code Ann. § 16-15-501).

Which hospital treats serious crash injuries near Goodlettsville?

TriStar Skyline Medical Center at 3441 Dickerson Pike in Nashville, a few miles south of Goodlettsville, received full state designation as a Level I trauma center on September 30, 2024. In Sumner County, TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center and Highpoint Health, Sumner in Gallatin, the former Sumner Regional Medical Center, run emergency departments.

I am an older driver and the insurer blames my earlier back problems. Can I still recover?

Yes. Tennessee law allows recovery when a crash aggravates a condition that existed before it, measured by how much worse the crash made it. The evidence that decides these claims is the medical record from before and after: how often the back was treated before, and what changed afterward. Drivers 65 and over were involved in 916 Sumner County crashes in 2025, so this argument comes up often here.

Can I recover if I was partly at fault?

Yes, if your share is under 50 percent; your recovery is reduced by your share (McIntyre v. Balentine, 1992). In a left turn crash on US 31E where the insurer puts 25 percent of the fault on you, a $60,000 claim becomes $45,000. At 50 percent it becomes nothing.

What if the other driver carries only the minimum coverage?

Their insurer's payment stops at the policy limit, $25,000 for each injured person under § 55-12-102. Beyond that, look to your own policy: Tennessee sets uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage equal to your liability limits unless you turned it down or lowered it in writing (§ 56-7-1201).
